Old Faithful is a great place to look for orchids. There are at least 4 species to be found, depending on when you are there.
From early June to late July look for bog orchids (Platanthera sp.) by the Firehole River. I look down from the small bridge that is closest to the Old Faithful Lodge. The bog orchids are mixed in with the tall grass a few feet back from the water's edge. Also look for western coralroot orchids (Corallorhiza mertensiana). There is a large colony in the cabin area. Walk from cabin 128 toward across the road following the old sewer line and past some un-numbered cabins (employee housing). Then look to your left. The western coral root orchids are under the pine trees in large numbers.
In August, look for ladies tresses (Spiranthes romanzoffiana) right on the Firehole water's edge near the same footbridge described above. Binoculars help when spotting orchids from a bridge. Not all the photos below were taken at Old Faithful, but I have found all these species there.
