Aztalan occupied approximately 900 to 1200 C.E. Cahokia occupied longer, approx 700 to 1400 C.E.  Woodland Indians who built effigy, linear and conical mounds were here first. Who were the carvers and painters whose art is still found at Washington St. Park, Mo, and Roche a Cri St. Park, Wi?

Indian Mound Park, St Paul, MN

Indian Mound Park and "Carver's Cave" in St Paul, Minnesota,
overlooking a bend in the Mississippi River. Carver's Cave had petroglyphs, but the soft stone crumbled, and later it was used by a brewer to cool beer, and the railroad obliterated the entry.
But some of the mounds on the ridge above the cave were saved.

"The entrance to the cave is at present blocked by a railroad track. Its capacious chamber is filled with beer barrels. Its pearly stream has ceased to flow. It is slowly dying of I civilization, and in a few years will be known only in history, ... and the landmarks of the past are obliterated by the swelling wave of the human race" (Newson, 1886, p. 5).
